Angus hesitated at the front door of the police station, second-guessing. He should just walk out that door and leave for the night. It wasn’t fair to Claire. But then, maybe, it was. He liked her company. They’d had fun at the Games. He had to let Amy slide into his past.

Claire looked up from her desk. Her eyes lit up. “Hello, Inspector! Are you off for home? How was the donut?”

“Grand, thanks.” He smiled, thinking he should walk away and leave her alone. His heart wasn’t in it, not really. But she was nice. He’d been entirely honest with her, and she still wanted to see him. He closed the distance between them in a few steps, and squatted down, arms on her desk. “I’m, uh...” He cleared his throat. It felt different, very different, from offering Amy a coffee. Everything had seemed natural and easy with Amy. “My pipe band is playing at Glenmirril.” Amy had wanted to hear him play. It wouldn’t happen. “Would you like to come?”

Her face shone. “When?”

“The twenty-seventh, in the evening.”

Claire glanced at the calendar on her desk. “I’m off that day.”

“I have to be there early,” Angus said. “But we could meet in the coffee shop, before I start playing.”

“I’d love to.”

Angus smiled, and rose. He had the same sad, reluctant feeling he did, on waking from a good dream, and forcing himself to get out of bed and leave it behind, no matter how much he looked forward to the day. Amy had to slide into the realm of pleasant dreams that needed to be left behind. Claire was nice. “Thanks for the donut,” he said, and headed out into the evening.
